Our contact check
If your website's logs show a visit from SpoofmarkContactCheck, this page explains it.
Its full user agent is: Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; SpoofmarkContactCheck/0.1; +https://spoofmark.com/contact-check)
What it is for
Spoofmark checks the public DNS records of email domains belonging to companies on the Companies House register. To tell a company what we found, we need a general enquiries address for it, such as info@ or enquiries@. The contact check looks for one on the company's own website.
What it does
- It visits the website we have matched to a company when we first check that company.
- It reads your robots.txt file first, and does not fetch any page that a Disallow rule excludes, whether the rule is written for all crawlers (User-agent: *) or for SpoofmarkContactCheck by name.
- It then fetches at most four pages, such as your home page and contact page, waiting between requests, and stops as soon as it finds a general address.
- It does not fill in forms, follow links, log in or keep copies of the pages it reads.
- It keeps only one general address published on those pages, such as info@ or enquiries@, and nothing else from them. It does not keep named staff addresses: if your pages show only named addresses, we record that there is no general address and do not write to you. We use the general address to send one short note about what your domain's records allow and at most one follow-up.
How to opt out
Email hello@spoofmark.com with your domain. We will add it to our do-not-contact list, so that we never visit your site or write to you again. You can also block the contact check alone, without affecting search engines, by adding two lines to your robots.txt file: User-agent: SpoofmarkContactCheck on the first, and Disallow: / on the second.
Our privacy notice, at spoofmark.com/privacy, explains what we hold and for how long.
